Jay Shah: Pant Eligible for T20 World Cup if Fit to Keep

BCCI Secretary Jay Shah has suggested that Rishabh Pant could participate in the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup if he is deemed fit for wicketkeeping duties. The ICC tournament is slated to commence on June 1, with the United States of America and the West Indies co-hosting. Pant’s potential inclusion hinges on his ability to maintain fitness and fulfill the wicketkeeper’s role effectively, underlining the significance of his recovery and readiness for the prestigious event.

Jay Shah on Rishab Pant:

Rishabh Pant has been sidelined since December 2022 following a serious car accident, resulting in a severe right knee injury necessitating surgery. However, he has undergone successful rehabilitation, and Delhi Capitals indicate he is poised to lead the team in the upcoming Indian Premier League, commencing on March 22. Despite the setback, Pant’s recovery progress is promising, hinting at his potential return to competitive cricket and potentially participating in the forthcoming Men’s T20 World Cup, as suggested by BCCI secretary Jay Shah.

He said, “He (Rishabh Pant) is batting well, he is keeping well. We will declare him fit very soon. If he can play the T20 World Cup for us, that will be a big thing for us. He is a big asset for us. If he can keep, he can play the World Cup. Let’s see how he does in the IPL”.

Jay Shah on Mohd.Shami and KL Rahul:

BCCI secretary Jay Shah has confirmed Mohammed Shami‘s return to India following surgery abroad. Shami, India’s top pacer, is recuperating from ankle surgery on his right Achilles last month and aims to return to action against Bangladesh later this year.

Meanwhile, KL Rahul is undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru, as stated by Shah. Rahul’s progress, alongside Shami’s recovery, will be crucial for India as they prepare to face Bangladesh in two Tests and three T20Is.

Mohammed Shami was absent from India’s recent five-match Test series against England due to his recovery from surgery. Conversely, KL Rahul missed the last four Tests against the Ben Stokes-led side due to discomfort in his right quadriceps. Despite this, Rahul is anticipated to captain the Lucknow Super Giants in the upcoming 2024 IPL. Their respective absences have necessitated careful rehabilitation to ensure their readiness for future cricketing commitments.

He said, “ Shami’s surgery is done; he is back in India. Shami’s return is likely for the home series against Bangladesh. KL Rahul needed an injection, he has started rehab and is at the NCA”.
