IPL Auction
The IPL 2025 Auction is just around the corner, promising to be an electrifying event. Scheduled for November 24 and 25, 2024, the auction will take place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This year, a total of 574 players have been shortlisted, creating a competitive atmosphere among franchises. Each team will aim to strengthen their squad for the upcoming season.
The IPL 2025 Auction features a diverse pool of talent, including 366 Indian players and 208 overseas cricketers. Among these, 81 players have set their base price at a staggering ₹2 crore. The excitement is palpable as franchises prepare to bid for top talents like Rishabh Pant and Jos Buttler.
With 204 player slots available, including 70 for overseas players, teams are strategizing to make impactful acquisitions. The IPL 2025 Auction is not just about big names; it’s also an opportunity for emerging talents to shine.Â
Why is the IPL 2025 Auction a Mega Auction?Â
The IPL 2025 Auction is termed a “mega auction” due to its unique structure and significance in the league’s cycle. Every three years, IPL franchises experience a reset, allowing them to retain only a limited number of players. For this auction, teams can retain a maximum of six players. This rule compels franchises to rebuild their squads significantly, making the IPL 2025 Auction a crucial event for all teams.Â
In contrast to mini-auctions, which occur annually and allow teams to retain as many players as they wish, mega-auctions involve a larger pool of players. This year, 574 players will go under the hammer, necessitating a two-day auction format. The sheer number of participants and the strategic decisions involved elevate the stakes for franchises, making it an exciting spectacle for fans.
The last mega auction in IPL was in 2022. IPL 2023 and 2024 saw mini auctions. It has been three years since the last IPL Mega Auction. Hence, the IPL 2025 Auction will be a mega auction. The next IPL Mega Auction will likely be held before the IPL 2028.Â
How Many Players Are Available in the Auction?
The initial list of registered players for the IPL 2025 Mega Auction was 1574. However, it was cut short to just 574 players.Â
