“It’s a mixture of trying to find that…” CSK’s Lineup Shakeup Fails to Spark, Fleming Seeks Winning Combo for IPL Success

The IPL 2024 is witnessing some exciting clashes. In the last match, Chennai Super Kings locked horns with Lucknow Super Giants at the M Chidambaram Stadium. In that match, Chennai Super Kings faced a defeat of 6 wickets. They have faced two consecutive defeats against the same team. After the defeat, Stephen Fleming addressed the frequent alterations within the team during the current IPL season, highlighting the ongoing adaptability.

CSK’s Struggle and Fleming’s Views:

In a double showdown against Lucknow Super Giants, Chennai Super Kings suffered back-to-back defeats, shaking their stronghold in the ongoing clashes. The first bout unfolded at Ekana Stadium, where both teams fiercely battled, yet CSK faltered in the face of LSG’s onslaught. Returning to their fortress at Chennai’s home ground, hopes soared as skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad dazzled with a remarkable century. However, despite his heroics, victory eluded CSK’s grasp, leaving them grappling with a faltering rhythm and uncertain prospects in the league.

CSK’s strategic move to bench Rachin Ravindra in favor of Daryl Mitchell, alongside captain Ruturaj Gaikwad and Ajinkya Rahane at the helm, aimed for a winning formula. However, the anticipated spark failed to ignite, leaving CSK yearning for the desired impact. Despite calculated adjustments, the team grappled with unmet expectations, stirring speculation about the efficacy of their lineup choices.

Fleming said, “It’s a mixture of trying to find that [combination] and also form,” Fleming said at his post-match press conference. “We’re a little bit uncomfortable with some areas, so we’re trying to find not a quick fix, but the right combination where players are going to contribute for the back end of this tournament.”

Mustafizur’s Absence and Later Plans:

Mustafizur Rahman‘s stint with CSK has been tumultuous, marred by visa issues leading to sporadic appearances. Flying home soon, his departure prompts CSK to seek worthy replacements. Fleming acknowledged the challenge, citing injuries compounding their woes. Matheesha Pathirana and Rahane’s setbacks disrupted team balance. Mustafizur’s absence against Sunrisers Hyderabad further strained CSK’s resources. With his availability until May 1, when they confront Punjab Kings, CSK seeks a seamless transition before he departs for Bangladesh‘s series against Zimbabwe, leaving big shoes to fill.

On this matter, Fleming said, “We’ve got another change coming up with Mustafizur [leaving] in a couple of games,” Fleming said. “So, we’re just trying to prepare and get a side that will give us the run home. We’ve had injuries, we’ve been a little bit unsettled, but the main thing is getting guys in key areas and in form. That sometimes takes a bit of time. Yes, there has been more change; some were forced upon us and some of it is form.”

Praising Ruturaj and Mitchell’s Batting Order:

In the last match against Lucknow Super Giants, Chennai skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad scored an exceptional century and remained unbeaten on 108 runs in 60 balls including 12 boundaries and 3 over-boundaries. CSK coach praised him. He said, “Ruturaj did that today, so hopefully he can continue his form and the others can pick that up… We’re not firing on all cylinders by any means but we’re in each game and we’re asking teams to play well to beat us. We just got to get a little bit better.”

Reflecting on Daryl Mitchell’s shifting batting roles, a former CSK player expressed concerns over the unsettled positioning, necessitated by experimental strategies. With only 146 runs across seven innings at a modest strike rate of 123.72, Mitchell’s lack of consistency is evident. Having been shuffled through four different positions, his struggle persists. However, there’s optimism from Fleming regarding Mitchell’s potential at No.3, a position where he’s thrived representing New Zealand, hinting at a possible resurgence in form for the beleaguered batters.

Fleming said, “There’s a lot of pressure obviously. Getting up the order is more comfortable for him. Me putting him down the order in the hitting role wasn’t his best position. So, we’ve looked to rectify that and get him up the order where he has had his best performances internationally. That might take a little bit of time, but the top three need to contribute the majority of runs.”
