Scotland captain Kathryn Bryce was filled with emotion after playing a pivotal role in securing her team’s historic qualification for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Her standout performance contributed significantly to Scotland’s achievement, marking a milestone in their cricketing journey. Bryce’s leadership and skill were instrumental in leading her team to this milestone, reflecting the dedication and hard work of the entire squad. This achievement holds special significance for both Bryce and Scottish cricket.

Scotland’s Selection in ICC Women’s T20 WC:

In a significant victory, Scotland secured a spot in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup by defeating Ireland convincingly in the semi-finals held in Abu Dhabi. This win not only propelled them to the main event in Bangladesh in October but also marked a historic achievement for Scottish cricket. Scotland’s triumph echoed Sri Lanka’s qualification, making them one of the two teams to advance to the prestigious tournament. The team’s stellar performance in the qualifier highlighted their determination and skill, setting the stage for an exciting and competitive participation in the upcoming World Cup event.

Scotland’s upcoming appearance at the Women’s T20 World Cup marks a historic milestone, representing years of dedication and perseverance for captain Kathryn Bryce. After falling short in previous Qualifier campaigns in 2015, 2018, 2019, and 2022, Bryce’s journey culminates in this well-deserved opportunity. Her determination and resilience have been instrumental in Scotland’s qualification, making this achievement even more meaningful for the team and Bryce herself.

Kathryn Bryce’s Statement:

At the age of 18, Kathryn Bryce made her debut appearance in the 2015 qualifier held in Thailand, where Scotland narrowly missed qualifying for the 2016 T20 World Cup. The team’s defeat to Ireland in the semi-finals of that event was a tough setback. Despite this early disappointment, Bryce’s determination and growth over the years have now led Scotland to secure their place in the upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup, marking a significant milestone in her cricketing journey.

After enduring three additional unsuccessful campaigns, Kathryn Bryce achieved her long-awaited goal with a standout Player of the Match performance in the semi-finals. This victory was especially sweet as it came against the team that had defeated Scotland in 2015. Bryce’s exceptional leadership and performance propelled her team into this year’s Women’s T20 World Cup, fulfilling a personal and collective aspiration for Scotland’s cricketing journey.

She said, “There have been so many people playing before us and so many different people playing at that first qualifier we played at in Thailand. We have had a couple of good Qualifiers, but when we made it to the semi-finals there was not much chance of us getting through.”

She further said, “It has been a tough day or so thinking about it knowing you can get there as we have the squad to do it and it almost makes it a bit harder to keep the emotions in check and to get through.”

Sarah Bryce’s Statement:

The victory held special significance for Kathryn Bryce, who has shared most of her international career with her younger sister, Sarah. The Bryce sisters remained unbeaten at the crease during the crucial match, with Kathryn securing the win by hitting the winning runs off Ireland spinner Eimear Richardson in the 17th over. This moment not only marked a significant achievement in their careers but also highlighted the strong bond and partnership between the Bryce siblings on the field.

Sarah said, “It is crazy to think we had our first Qualifier back in 2015 for each of us and the first one for Scotland was in 2008. Scotland was created as a women’s team in 2000 and here we are in 2024 finally having gotten over the line.”

She further said, “And I think I saw on Twitter that we are only the 12th women’s team to make it to the T20 World Cup it is just unbelievable. What a journey it has been. I feel so lucky to have done it alongside you as my sister. To experience many lows and finally have a crazy massive high.”

Having secured their place in the upcoming T20 World Cup, Scotland aims to conclude the Qualifier tournament on a strong note by defeating Sri Lanka in the final on Tuesday. Reflecting on their earlier defeat by Sri Lanka, Kathryn Bryce emphasizes the importance of focusing on the final match and putting aside the emotions of qualification. The team is determined to finish the Qualifier with a victory and build momentum for the World Cup ahead.
