IPL 2024: English Players’ Unavailability For Playoffs Not Certain

Negotiations are underway between the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) and the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) regarding the participation of England’s white-ball players in the IPL playoffs amidst their impending commitment to the T20 World Cup. The playoffs, scheduled from May 21 to May 26, coincide with England’s four-match T20I series against Pakistan, posing a dilemma for the players and the cricketing boards involved.

England’s white-ball captain, Jos Buttler, recently advocated for the withdrawal of English players from the IPL playoffs ahead of the T20 World Cup, sparking a contentious debate among stakeholders. The move has not been well received by IPL franchises, who had planned their strategies and investments in alignment with the availability of English players throughout the tournament. The sudden change in stance by Buttler and the potential unavailability of key players have stirred tensions between the franchises and the cricketing boards.

According to sources close to the developments, the franchises are adamant about retaining their English players for the crucial playoff stage, emphasizing the commitments made by the ECB before the IPL auction in December last year. Discussions between the BCCI and the ECB aim to resolve the impasse and ensure a harmonious conclusion to the IPL season, balancing the interests of all parties involved.

“The franchises are in no mood to release their England players at this stage of the tournament, as they had planned accordingly at the auction. Talks are on between the BCCI and the ECB to resolve this issue,” a source familiar with the matter revealed.

Expressing concerns over the unilateral decision by Buttler and its potential repercussions, another source emphasized the importance of honoring prior commitments in professional engagements. “Yes, the BCCI has taken it up (with the ECB). I hope the ECB keep their commitment they made before the auction. This type of adhoc withdrawal of players will come with consequences,” the source stated.
