Inzamamul Haq Resigns as Chief Selector Amid Allegations of Player Management Company Links

Inzamamul Haq, the Chief Selector of the Pakistan men’s cricket team, has announced his decision to step down from his role. This development comes in the wake of unverified media reports alleging that Haq had a stake in a player’s management company registered with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). These reports raised questions about the team selection process and prompted Haq to request an inquiry by the PCB.

Allegations and Inquiry

Haq stated in an interview on SAMAA TV that he approached the PCB after the allegations surfaced and urged the board to initiate an investigation. In response, the PCB formed a five-member committee to probe the matter. Subsequently, Haq chose to step down from his post until the inquiry concludes and its findings are available. He expressed his willingness to cooperate with the PCB once the investigation is completed.

In addressing the situation, Inzamamul Haq shared his sentiments, emphasizing the personal impact of unsubstantiated claims. He acknowledged the pain and distress that allegations without evidence can cause, particularly for someone who has served Pakistan as a cricketer for two decades.

Haq has previously represented Pakistan in a 20-year cricket career, making him a well-known figure in the country. He expressed, “I must tell you very clearly that such companies are recommended by the ICC, and PCB has all their data.” Haq denied any association with the player’s management company in question, named Saya Corporation.

PCB’s Response

The Pakistan Cricket Board responded to the situation by forming a five-member fact-finding committee. This committee is tasked with investigating allegations related to conflicts of interest in the team selection process, as reported in the media. The PCB emphasized that the committee will promptly submit its report and recommendations to the PCB management.

Inzamamul Haq took on the role of Chief Selector for the Pakistan cricket team on August 7, marking his second stint in this position. He had previously held the role in 2016 and concluded his term in 2019 after serving for three years. Notably, Haq’s resignation coincides with Pakistan’s lacklustre performance in the ongoing World Cup. The national team suffered four consecutive losses against India, Australia, Afghanistan, and South Africa after initial victories against the Netherlands and Sri Lanka.
