Unmukt Chand dropped from USA Squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup

In a significant shakeup to the USA Cricket team’s roster, Unmukt Chand, the former Indian U-19 World Cup-winning captain, has been dropped from the 15-man squad for the upcoming 2024 T20 World Cup. The decision comes as a surprise to many, considering Chand’s prominence in franchise-based T20 leagues worldwide and his aspirations to represent the United States on the global stage.

The announcement was made by the USA Cricket (USAC) Men’s National Selection Panel, which opted to include former New Zealand all-rounder Corey Anderson in the squad. Anderson’s inclusion adds experience and depth to the team, given his previous appearances in multiple ICC tournaments for New Zealand.

Monank Patel retains his position as the captain of the USA squad, with Aaron Jones named as his deputy. The squad, led by Patel, is gearing up for its T20 World Cup debut as one of the co-hosts alongside the West Indies.

“USA Cricket (USAC) five member Men’s National Selection Panel has picked its 15-member squad for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup. The tournament, set to commence on June 1 and jointly hosted by the USA and West Indies, will see Monank Patel lead the team once again,” stated USA’s official statement.

Chand’s omission from the squad follows his move to the USA after retiring from Indian cricket. Despite his efforts to establish himself in the American cricket scene, Chand faced disappointment after being overlooked for the final squad selection, even after the USA’s successful T20I series against Canada.

On the other hand, Corey Anderson’s return to the ICC tournament fold marks a significant comeback for the seasoned all-rounder, who previously represented New Zealand in multiple T20 World Cups and the 50-over World Cup.

Additionally, the USA squad sees the recall of former Pakistan U-19 cricketer Shayan Jahangir, replacing Gajanand Singh. Jahangir’s inclusion aims to bolster the team’s batting lineup, adding stability ahead of the T20 World Cup campaign.

Talismanic bowler Ali Khan makes his return to the side following an injury layoff, while former Canada captain Nitish Kumar earns a spot in the final 15, showcasing his prowess with a notable performance against Canada in the recent T20I series.

The batting lineup is further strengthened with the inclusion of former Delhi and RCB batter Milind Kumar, along with Andries Gous and Steven Taylor.

Here is the finalized 15-man squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup representing the USA:

  • Monank Patel (captain, wk)
  • Aaron Jones (vice-captain)
  • Andries Gous (wk)
  • Steven Taylor
