Sunrisers Hyderabad becomes the first team to score 250+ totals twice

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) made cricket history in the Indian Premier League (IPL) by slamming the highest-ever total in the tournament’s history. SRH achieved this feat against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Monday, April 15.

SRH’s batting onslaught was led by Travis Head, Heinrich Klaasen, and Abdul Samad, who dominated the RCB bowlers on a flat batting track at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Travis Head set the tone for SRH with a remarkable century off just 39 balls. His aggressive innings of 102 off 41 balls laid the foundation for SRH’s imposing total. Following Head’s dismissal, Heinrich Klaasen took charge and continued his rich vein of form, smashing 67 off 31 balls.

Despite losing Klaasen in the final ball of the 17th over, SRH’s batting depth was on display as Abdul Samad and Aiden Markram punished the RCB bowlers, helping SRH post a mammoth total of 287/3 in their allotted 20 overs.

This total not only shattered the previous record for the highest total in IPL history, which was also held by SRH when they scored 277 runs against Mumbai Indians (MI) earlier in the tournament, but it also marked the second-highest total ever hit in the history of T20 cricket.

SRH’s 287/3 is now the second-highest total in T20 cricket, with Nepal’s 314/3 against Mongolia in the 2023 Asian Games holding the current record for the highest T20 total.

RCB’s bowlers had a tough day as they were unable to contain the SRH batters, who hit a total of 22 sixes. Off-spinner Will Jacks was the most economical bowler for RCB, with an economy rate of 10.67 after conceding 32 runs off his 3 overs. However, Reece Topley and Vijay Kumar Vyshak had a forgettable outing, conceding 68 and 64 runs respectively.

SRH’s stunning performance with the bat not only secured them a convincing victory but also etched their name in the annals of IPL history with a record-breaking total, showcasing their formidable batting prowess in the tournament.

SRH’s remarkable achievement comes amidst a competitive IPL 2024 season, highlighting the unpredictable nature of T20 cricket and setting the stage for more thrilling encounters in the tournament.
