Sri Lanka Recruits Ex-Pakistan Pacer Aaqib Javed as T20 Bowling Coach

Sri Lankan Cricket has made a big announcement.  Aaqib Javed, the former Pakistani fast bowler, is now the new coach for Sri Lanka’s national cricket team. This appointment is temporary, just until the T20 World Cup ends in June. Javed will focus on coaching the fast bowlers during his time with the team.

New Coach of Sri Lanka:

Sri Lankan Cricket (SLC) has confirmed the appointment of Aaqib Javed, a former Pakistani fast bowler, as the new fast-bowling coach for the men’s national cricket team. This announcement was made on Saturday, March 16th. Javed’s role is on a short-term basis, and he is set to work with the team until the conclusion of the T20 World Cup in June of this year.

In a press release, SLC mentioned that Javed’s tenure will extend until the conclusion of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, slated to take place in June 2024 in the West Indies and the USA. This strategic move underscores Sri Lanka’s commitment to strengthening its coaching staff and optimizing its chances for success in the upcoming international cricket tournaments.

SLC CEO Ashley De Silva confirmed Javed’s appointment, expressing confidence in the former Pakistan player’s capacity to enhance Sri Lankan cricket in various aspects. In the press release, he said, “We warmly welcome Aaqib and believe that his immense international experience, both in playing and coaching, will help our bowlers come into good shape ahead of the upcoming major international competitions, such as the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.”

Aaqib Javed’s Career:

Javed’s arrival injects a wealth of experience and a champion’s mindset into Sri Lanka’s coaching staff. With a stellar playing career that saw him as part of Pakistan’s triumphant 1992 World Cup squad, Javed boasts over 200 international wickets. Transitioning to coaching, he steered Pakistan’s U19 team to a World Cup victory in 2004 and played a pivotal role in their T20 World Cup win in 2009 as the bowling coach.

His coaching prowess extends beyond Pakistan; Javed played a pivotal role in elevating the UAE team to ODI and T20 status. Under his guidance, the UAE team made notable appearances in the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup in 2015 and the qualifiers for the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2014, showcasing significant progress on the international stage.

Currently, Javed dons multiple hats in the cricketing arena, serving as the Director of Cricket Operations and Head Coach of Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). His multifaceted experience, coupled with his achievements as both player and coach, underscores his invaluable contribution to cricket development, making him a prized addition to Sri Lanka’s coaching setup as they aim for excellence on the global stage.
