Sourav Ganguly criticized coach Ravi Shastri for sending Dhoni at number 7

Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has a lot to say regarding Indian team management’s decision post the semi-final loss against New Zealand. Sourav Ganguly criticized the coach Ravi Shastri for sending Dhoni at number 7.

The Story

New Zealand beat India by 18 runs to make it to the final for second consecutive times. India while chasing a modest total of 239 had a top order collapse. India were slipping away with 5/3 on board and then a partnership between MS Dhoni and Ravindra Jadeja recovered the innings. They took the match so close that India looked like clinching the victory. But post-Jadeja’s dismissal and Dhoni’s run out India were soon all for just 221.

The way India began to chase nobody expected them to stay almost till the last over. Ravindra Jadeja scores a 50 while MS Dhoni concentrated on stabilizing the innings mainly. But Dhoni was sent much later in the innings. The general expectation was that Dhoni would walk in at number 4 or 5 as India were crumbling and needed a senior strong calm batter. But Dhoni came to bat at number 7 and this raised a lot of eyebrows.

Sourav Ganguly criticized the coach Ravi Shastri

Indian cricketing legend Sourav Ganguly questioned the same move by the team management. He especially questioned about the role of Ravi Shastri. Ganguly clearly said, “Dhoni should’ve walked ahead of Karthik.  You would have Pandya, Karthik in the back end of the innings along with Jadeja. I don’t know what the coach was thinking but that was a big blunder.”

Ganguly gave an explanation for the same. He mentioned about Dhoni’s composure and the ability to control the situation. “Dhoni should have batted up. You need that composure and not just his batting. He would not have allowed wickets to fall in the cluster. If Dhoni was there when Pant was batting, he would not have allowed Pant to play that shot against the breeze. You can’t have Dhoni at number seven,” added Sourav Ganguly.
