Sanju Samson Pokes Fun at Rajasthan Royals’ Catching Woes, Calls for Improvement

Following a series of comical high-catch instances involving Rajasthan Royals (RR), captain Sanju Samson took a lighthearted yet pointed jab at his team, highlighting the need for improvement in catching skills.

The incident that triggered Samson’s remarks occurred during a match against Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. In the penultimate over of the first innings, a miscued shot off a fuller delivery from PBKS batsman Ashutosh Sharma saw both Samson and fast bowler Avesh Khan charging towards the ball. Despite their efforts, neither player managed to complete the catch, allowing Sharma to score crucial runs in the final overs.

Reflecting on the incident, Samson acknowledged the recurring nature of such high-catch scenarios, citing instances from the previous IPL season as well.

However, he expressed satisfaction that players were eager to attempt catches, stating, “I would be very sad if people are just staying away and not catching it.”

“We had few funny instances from last year and this year. But I am really happy that everyone is eager to go and catch. I would be very sad if people are just staying away and not catching it,” he said.

In a post-match presentation, Samson addressed the challenges of taking catches in a noisy stadium, saying, “It gets a bit tough actually – the stadium is full of noise and when people call, we are looking at the ball, we can’t look who is coming.”

He also delivered a tongue-in-cheek message to his fast bowlers, suggesting that catches are easier to take for wicketkeepers than for fielders, hinting at the need for improved coordination and communication in the field.

“It gets a bit tough actually – the stadium is full of noise and when people call, we are looking at the ball, we can’t look who is coming. I need to tell my fast bowlers that it’s a bit easier to catch with the gloves instead of hands,” he added.
