Kolkata Knight Riders’ fast bowler Harshit Rana has been hit with a one-match suspension and a hefty fine for breaching the IPL’s Code of Conduct during their recent win against the Delhi Capitals. This suspension will see Rana miss the upcoming crucial clash against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on May 3rd.
“Mr Harshit Rana, Bowler, Kolkata Knight Riders has been fined 100 per cent of his match fees and suspended for one match for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during Match 47 of the TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 against Delhi Capitals at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata on April 29, 2024.”, the IPL mentioned in an official press release.
Unveiling the Offense: Speculation Surrounds Rana’s Actions
While the official IPL press release doesn’t disclose the specific nature of Rana’s violation, speculation points towards his animated celebration after dismissing Delhi Capitals batsman Abhishek Porel. Rana, who impressed with a two-wicket haul for just 28 runs in KKR’s dominant seven-wicket victory, might have overstepped the line with his send-off to the departing batsman. This celebratory act resulted in a Level 1 breach under Article 2.5 of the tournament’s regulations.
“Rana committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.5 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding. The player was earlier penalised under the same level and article of the IPL Code of Conduct.”, the release further stated.
Repeat Offender: Rana’s Second Offense This Season
This incident marks Rana’s second brush with the Code of Conduct this season. The young pacer was previously penalized during the match against the Sunrisers Hyderabad. On that occasion, Rana was fined 60% of his match fee for directing a sharp stare towards dismissed batsman Mayank Agarwal.
The Rana suspension comes at a crucial time for the Kolkata Knight Riders. Currently sitting comfortably in second place on the points table with 12 points, KKR also boasts the best Net Run Rate (NRR) in the competition (1.096). However, Rana’s absence creates a gap in their bowling attack, forcing the team management to look for alternative options for the upcoming match against their arch-rivals, the Mumbai Indians.

While Rana has been a valuable contributor with his pace and wicket-taking abilities, KKR has a strong bowling line-up.
