Rohit Sharma talks about Tilak Varma’s chances in the 2023 World Cup

Tilak Varma’s introduction to the international arena has been nothing short of sensational. Demonstrating his prowess with the bat, he has achieved scores of 39, 51, and an undefeated 49 in the ongoing T20I series against the West Indies. This remarkable performance not only signifies his competence on the grandest stage, following his impactful performances in the past two IPL seasons, where he stood out amidst the team’s inconsistent batting displays, but it has also prompted the Indian cricket community to reconsider their strategies for the upcoming ODI World Cup.

While it appears improbable that the selection committee led by Ajit Agarkar will take a drastic step to alter their existing choices, especially in such close proximity to the World Cup, there are growing voices advocating for Tilak’s inclusion. Esteemed Indian cricketers, including Ravichandran Ashwin, have put forth their opinion, urging the BCCI to contemplate Tilak Varma as a viable option. Amidst this buzz and deliberation, Indian captain Rohit Sharma has finally addressed the matter.

It was during Rohit Sharma’s tenure with the Mumbai Indians in 2022 that Tilak Varma was introduced to the franchise, marking the commencement of his journey. Over the course of two years, he not only cemented his place within the middle order of the team but also earned a reputation as one of the most promising young talents in the tournament. His performances garnered widespread attention, with numerous cricket experts advocating for his inclusion in the Indian team.

Subsequently, in July, he received a significant breakthrough when he was selected for the Indian T20I squad for the West Indies tour and was also named in the Asian Games squad. His debut cap was presented to him in the opening match of the series. In that match, he showcased his potential with an impressive 25-ball 39. Following this, he achieved a significant milestone by registering his maiden international fifty during the second game of the series. Although he came agonizingly close to achieving back-to-back half-centuries, he was left stranded at 49* in the third T20I.

Amid India’s fluctuating performance in the T20I series, Tilak Varma’s consistent scores elevated him to the position of the standout player. However, it wasn’t just his runs that caught the attention of veteran cricketers; they were equally impressed by his adeptness in comprehending match situations and displaying maturity in handling various scenarios. As a result, many of these experienced players advocated for his inclusion in the Indian squad for the upcoming 50-over World Cup.

While Rohit Sharma refrained from disclosing his strategic approach towards the World Cup, he showered the young talent with commendation and admiration.

Rohit Sharma said

“He looks very promising. I have seen him for two years now, he has got the hunger, and that is the most important thing,” Rohit said. “In him I can see, for the age that he is of, he is quite matured. He knows his batting so well. When I speak with him I understand that the boy knows his batting – where he has to hit, what he has to do in that period.

“That is all that I will say about him, I do not know about the World Cup and all, but definitely the guy is talented and he showed it in these few games that he has played for India,” he added.
