No Mega Auction ahead of IPL 2021? A Source Reveals.

With not much time left in hand between the 2020 and 2021 editions of the Indian Premier League, the auction ahead of 2021 IPL will be postponed reportedly. According to a source’s version to Times of India, there is not enough time to plan the ‘mega auction’.

The 13th edition of the Indian Premier League is all set to begin on September 19 in UAE. after the exit of Vivo in the wake of political tension between India and China, currently the biggest challenge of the BCCI to find a title sponsor at the soonest. The first challenge in the COVID-19 situation was to organize the league this year. But as stated by the Indian cricket board president Sourav Ganguly earlier, the BCCI was eager to do so even if they had to take the league outside India. With the pandemic situation getting tougher in India day by day finally the IPL 2020 which was scheduled to be held on March 29 will be now played between September 19 and November 10.

But this rescheduling means the BCCI will have just a few months in hand to prepared for the next Indian Premier League. On the other hand, there is an auction planned ahead of the same where the franchises are expected to build the respective squads from the scratch. This sounds a bit unreal at this point of time.

What’s the scene?

According to a report by The Times of India, the BCCI is planning to let go of the auction. This is because of the scarcity of time. This means the franchises have to continue with their current squads in the next season of the league. A source told the daily that the mega auction needs huge preparation. “What’s the point in doing a mega auction now and not have enough time to plan it properly? IPL might as well go ahead and finish the 2021 edition of the tournament and then see how it wants to go about.”

In fact, it is true that the franchises need 3-4 months to make strategies for a mega auction. But with four and half months in between for two seasons, the best option would be to postpone the auction.
