MS Dhoni certainly deserves a proper send-off, says Kumble

Post World Cup 2019 MS Dhoni’s form and retirement have been the talk of the town. Fans and experts have started talking about the same since the sudden exit and a lot have demanded Dhoni’s retirement from international cricket. On the other hand, there are a few who want to give Dhoni the opportunity to take the final call. Anil Kumble is the new addition to the club.

Kumble on Dhoni’s retirement

Dhoni-led India to various ICC trophies including the ICC T20 World Cup in 2007, ICC 50 over World Cup in 2011 and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013. However, the recent form of the 38-year old has bothered the cricket world of late. Even his form has been associated with the elimination of Virat Kohli’s Indian cricket team from the World Cup. Dhoni’s approach to the batting has been criticized a lot. But former Indian skipper Anil Kumble thinks that Dhoni should be given a proper send-off after his immense contribution to Indian cricket. Kumble feels that the selectors should discuss accordingly around the same and plan. He said, “MS Dhoni certainly deserves a proper send-off, whenever he decides to move on from the sport. But for the team’s sake, the selectors need to sit down and have a discussion around what the plans are because it’s important that things be communicated.”

Kumble on India’s World Cup performance

Kumble reflected on India’s exit from World Cup 2019 in the semifinal against New Zealand as well. He said that it is important to have a consistent team throughout and India lacked in the execution of the same. “You’d want a consistent team to be playing right throughout and that’s exactly what didn’t happen in the 50-over competition.”

He added how the number 4 mystery was a discussion point throughout. He said that it was important to have a specific idea about everything during the planning period and responsibilities needed to be fixed. “There were a lot of changes leading up to the World Cup. We were still not sure about who that number 4 would be, the whole World Cup we kept on discussing who should bat at number 4, and that’s not what you want leading up to the 20 over World Cup. You’d want all those roles and responsibilities to be fixed and make sure that you have back-ups for certain positions, just in case somebody gets injured or if somebody’s out of form.”
