Lucknow Super Giants Captaincy in Flux: KL Rahul’s Future Uncertain After Heavy Defeat

KL Rahul‘s tenure as Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) captain has come under intense scrutiny following their demoralising defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on Wednesday. The loss practically eliminated LSG from playoff contention, raising questions about Rahul’s leadership and his future with the franchise.

Retention Unlikely, But Will Rahul Lead for the Remaining Matches?

While Rahul’s retention ahead of the 2025 mega auctions appears improbable, a more immediate question looms: will he continue as captain for LSG’s remaining two matches?

According to an anonymous IPL source, Rahul might choose to step down and dedicate his remaining time in the tournament solely to improving his batting performance.  The source further stated, “There is a five-day gap before the next game against DC. As of now, no decision has been taken but it is understood that if Rahul plans to just concentrate on his batting for the remaining two games, the management won’t mind.”

Goenka’s Frustration and Rahul’s Batting Struggles

Social media was abuzz with videos capturing LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka’s apparent frustration with Rahul following the SRH match. The discontent stemmed from the contrasting performances of the two teams’ openers.  While SRH openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma chased down the target of 167 runs in less than 10 overs, LSG’s batting lineup faltered on the same pitch.

Rahul’s own batting performance has been a cause for concern.  Despite being the team’s highest run scorer with 460 runs in 12 games, his strike rate of 136.09 has been underwhelming. This sluggish batting, particularly during the powerplay overs, is seen as a major contributor to LSG’s struggles.

A Mathematical (But Improbable) Chance for Playoffs

Technically, LSG are still mathematically in the playoff race. With wins in their remaining two matches against Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians, they could reach 16 points. However, their current net run rate of -0.760 makes a significant improvement highly unlikely.

If Rahul decides to step down, the responsibility of leading the team for the remaining matches could fall on Nicholas Pooran, the vice-captain and arguably LSG’s most impactful batsman this season.

The coming days will be crucial for LSG as they decide on their approach for the remaining matches. Whether Rahul stays on as captain or chooses to prioritize his batting form, a strong performance in their final two outings will be essential to salvage some pride and momentum for the young franchise.
