Koffee with Karan controversy: Hardik and Rahul ordered to donate INR 20 Lakh each

Indian cricketers Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul were in trouble after the controversial episode of the chat show Koffee with Karan was aired. The verdict for their misconduct is out. BCCI ombudsman Justice DK Jain has directed the duo to make a contribution worth INR 20 Lakh each to charity “in order to purge their collective indiscretion”.

Hardik and Rahul ordered to donate INR 20 Lakh each

They have been ordered to “pay INR 1 Lakh each to most-deserving widows of 10 constables each of para-military forces and to deposit Rs 10 Lakh each to a fund created for the promotion of cricket among the blind”.

“Taking into consideration all these aspects, in particular that the player has tendered an apology for the incident without seeking to justify his action, has acknowledged his duty to the society and expressed his willingness to hold himself to higher standards expected of him and has missed out five ODIs; in the interest of justice and fair play, in order to purge his collective indiscretion, it would suffice if the player is directed to..” read Justice Jain’s order.

Hardik and Rahul were criticized heavily for their offensive comments on women on the show. After the episode surfaced, they were suspended from playing international cricket. They were called back midway from the Australian tour. Consequently, they missed 5 ODIs.

However, an inquiry couldn’t take place due to the absence of an ombudsman or an ethics officer in the BCCI. The suspensions were lifted and the duo made it back to the national side. Both the cricketers appeared in person before the BCCI ombudsman on April 9 and 10. They had issued their unconditional apologies.

Both Hardik and Rahul have been selected in the Indian squad for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 to be played in England and Wales.
