The auction for the upcoming edition of IPL done in December. The tournament came one more step closer. But a few days before the auction, Mumbai Indians announced Hardik Pandya’s name as the captain. That announcement sparked buzz. Rohit Sharma’s fans were offended by this decision. After all this, Mumbai Indians’ Global Head of Cricket Mahela Jayawardene opened up about that matter.

In the retention phase, Mumbai Indians made a dramatic trade. They took Back Hardik Pandya from Gujarat Titans. That was a shock for all the fans across the globe. Even just a few days ago, the franchise declared Hardik Pandya as their captain. Rohit Sharma ended his tenure as the captain. That was a big decision by the franchise. 

On December 15, after the announcement came, the fans were angry over the franchise. They started reacting. A huge number of social media followers dropped. The franchise faced a lot of criticism. In 10 years of the captaincy tenure of Rohit Sharma, the franchise won five titles. Mumbai Indians made a brave decision thinking about the future.

Amid controversy, Mumbai Indians Global Head of Cricket Mahela Jayawardene opened up about this situation. He said, “It is a tough decision, It is emotional, to be honest – Mumbai has had that in the past too with Sachin, who played with the youngsters. He gave the leadership to someone else & made sure Mumbai was going in the right direction. We had this conversation & everyone is buying into that, it’s for us to look forward to the next season.”

 Later he also praised Rohit Sharma for his brilliant captaincy in the past 10 years. He said, “He has been absolutely brilliant. I have worked very closely with him. He is a fabulous individual and I am sure he will be part of the legacy who will guide that through.”
