IPL 2023: How can Royal Challengers Bangalore qualify for the Playoffs?

On Sunday, May 21, at Bengaluru’s M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in the 70th game of the IPL 2023, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will clash against Gujarat Titans (GT). RCB are in fourth place in the points standings after winning seven of their last thirteen games. GT has nine victories and has already earned a spot in the playoffs.

After 13 games, the Faf Du Plessis-led squad is fourth in the IPL 2023 standings and is one of the teams vying for a playoff spot. They also have an outstanding net run rate, which can be very important for making the playoffs.

RCB Qualification Scenarios

If RCB defeats GT, RCB will guarantee to qualify for the playoffs. In this case, RCB will earn 16 points, and even if MI defeats SRH, their net run rate won’t become better than RCB.

If SRH defeats MI and  RCB also loses to GT:

Then, even though they finished with 14 points (the same as MI and RR), RCB can still go to the playoffs. The situation for Faf Du Plessis’ team can get rather challenging at this point since they must make sure that the margin of defeat against GT is not too wide so that it doesn’t unintentionally hurt their run rate and they can finish up with a better run rate than RR’s.

If RCB loses to GT and MI wins against SRH, RCB will be eliminated from the tournament.

Head-to-Head Record

Last season, RCB and GT played off twice. Each team has a single victory. In their head to heads. RCB defeated GT by scoring 169 runs in 18.4 overs while retaining eight wickets.

Total Matches Played: 2

RCB Won: 1

GT Won: 1

In their most recent game, RCB defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by chasing down a 187-run target. Heinrich Klaasen’s first IPL century enabled SRH to score 186 runs with five wickets remaining. However, Faf du Plessis and Virat Kohli’s partnership made a mockery of that score by scoring 172 runs for the first wicket. Having scored his sixth IPL century, Virat Kohli was adjudged as the player of the match.

In their most recent match, GT also played SRH, and while batting first, they amassed a total of 188 runs for the loss of nine wickets. Shubman Gill, who struck his first IPL century, was instrumental in the reigning champions’ success with the bat. In response, SRH scored just 154 runs in 20 overs while losing nine wickets and suffering a 34-run defeat. In recognition of his batting performance, Gill was named Player of the Match.
