IPL 2023: How can Rajasthan Royals qualify for the playoffs?

At the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala, the Rajasthan Royals (RR) defeated the Punjab Kings (PBKS) by four wickets in yesterday’s 2023 Indian Premier League (IPL) match. With the victory, RR continued to compete in the playoff race while PBKS were eliminated.

But despite this victory, the qualification of Rajasthan is not in their hands. The team needs the outcomes of tomorrow’s matches to go their way in order to qualify for the playoffs. They are currently at the fifth position with 14 points and a net run rate of +0.148.

Rajasthan Royals Qualification Scenario

Even though they still have a mathematical chance of qualifying, RR’s future is no longer in their hands. It will heavily depend on other outcomes and other teams’ net run rates. If SRH defeats MI in their final game and GT defeats RCB (by more than 5 runs), all three teams will finish with 14 points, but RR will qualify because of its higher net run rate than MI and RCB.

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl first, Rajasthan let Punjab to recover from 50/4 to record a challenging 187/5. However, RR was able to secure a victory in 19.4 overs thanks to half-centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal (50 off 36) and Devdutt Padikkal (51 off 30), as well as an outstanding performance by Shimron Hetmyer (46 off 28). To find out if they can place in the top four, they are currently awaiting the outcome of the other matches.

When Jaiswal switch-hit Ellis to backward point, his excellent knock came to an end. A key fifth-wicket stand of 32 was then shared by Hetmyer and Riyan Parag (20 off 12). Before succumbing to the PBKS pacer, the latter hit Rabada for two maximums in the 18th over.

Hetmyer then hit Curran for two fours in the penultimate over before his superb innings was interrupted by a sensational catch by Shikhar Dhawan at cover. Off the last over, bowled by Rahul Chahar, RR needed nine runs. “Impact Player” Dhruv Jurel (10*) scored a maximum by smashing the fourth ball over the spinner’s head to give Rajasthan the victory.
