Former New Zealand spinner passes away

Former New Zealand legspinner Jack Alabaster passed away at the age of 93 in Cromwell on Tuesday night. Alabaster, considered one of New Zealand’s finest legspinners, played 21 Tests for his country between 1955 and 1972, claiming 49 wickets.

Alabaster played a crucial role in New Zealand’s early Test successes, being part of the team’s first four Test victories, including their first win away from home. He featured in tours to India and Pakistan in 1955-56, England in 1958, South Africa in 1961-62, and West Indies in 1971-72.

One of his notable performances came in the series against South Africa, where he took 22 wickets in five Tests, helping New Zealand secure their first series draw against the Proteas. His career-best match figures of 8 for 180 came in the third Test of the series, where New Zealand achieved their first Test win abroad.

In domestic cricket, Alabaster represented Otago and played a total of 143 first-class matches, claiming 500 wickets. He retired from first-class cricket after the West Indies tour in 1971-72 due to an Achilles tendon injury.

Alabaster’s contribution to New Zealand cricket, both on the field and off it, will be remembered fondly by fans and the cricketing community.
