Dhoni can’t be as good as he was when he was 20 or 23 – Kapil Dev

MS Dhoni has been constantly criticized for his form in recent times. Virat Kohli and the entire team have always defended the former captain. But the match in World Cup 2019 that India lost to England, MS Dhoni was criticized for his ‘intent’. Not just fans even legend like Sachin Tendulkar came up with questions. But the 1983 Indian cricket team captain Kapil Dev has a different perspective on the same. Kapil Dev says Unfair to criticise MS Dhoni.

MS Dhoni, so far so good

MS Dhoni who has been so far so good with a strike rate of 98.39 in this World Cup has got a new supporter now. Dhoni’s form, his strike rate are termed as ‘slow’ compared to his contemporaries in the limited over game. The 37-year old is expected to deliver as he used to in his earlier days. But Kapil Dev, one of the best all-rounders of India has asked people not to expect Dhoni to act as his young self anymore. He said it is unfair to expect Dhoni to deliver as a 20-year old.

“It’s very unfair to criticise Dhoni. It has happened to those who have been rated as all-time greats. They are not going to be 20 all over again,” Kapil opined.

The team needs Dhoni’s calmness

The captain who led India from the front during their first World Cup win back in 1983 seems absolutely fine with the way the senior member of Indian team is pulling it off thus far with batting and keeping. He said with an aggressive captain like Virat Kohli, the teams need someone as cool as Dhoni to bring in the balance and stability. Kapil said, “The most important thing is Dhoni is doing good as far as the team is concerned.” He also added, “With an aggressive Virat (Kohli) as a captain, it’s ideal to have someone with a calming effect like him. His wicketkeeping is good, and as I said, he can’t be as good as he was when he was 20 or 23,” felt the 60-year-old.”
