Andrew Flintoff has close eyes on the ‘next big’ English All rounder

Tom Lawes, a highly-rated young allrounder from Surrey, has caught the attention of former England cricketer Andrew Flintoff. Lawes earned a call-up to England’s Lions program based on his performances for Surrey last season, where he took 39 wickets at an impressive average of 19.76. He had the opportunity to work with Flintoff during a three-week training camp in Abu Dhabi.Discover Flintoff’s anticipation for the next English all-rounder.

Lawes described his experience with Flintoff as surreal, praising Flintoff’s approachability and willingness to share valuable insights and experiences. Despite not having memories of Flintoff’s playing days, Lawes grew up watching DVDs of the 2005 Ashes series, where Flintoff played a pivotal role for England.

Flintoff’s text to the youngster

“Fred dropped me a message saying he was buzzing to have me,” Lawes said. “It was a really nice feeling; a little bit out of the blue. I didn’t really know what was happening, and then to be able to work under him again… that will be really cool. I’m really happy with that.”

Flintoff’s Northern Superchargers recently signed Lawes on a £50,000 contract for the Hundred, demonstrating a significant show of faith in the young player. Lawes, who was an unused member of Oval Invincibles’ title-winning squad last season, is eager to contribute more in white-ball cricket this summer, particularly in the Blast for Surrey and the Hundred.

Lawes is currently part of the Surrey squad aiming to win their third consecutive Championship title. He is focused on continuing his impressive performances from last year and aims to be a genuine allrounder for his team. Ollie Pope, a teammate of Lawes, commended his talent, confidence, and desire to perform for the team, suggesting that Lawes has the potential to play for England in the future.

Lawes’ main strength is his versatility, often playing as one of five seamers for Surrey. He has a knack for bowling surprise yorkers, which has become his trademark. Looking ahead, Lawes aims to develop the skills necessary to succeed away from home conditions. Despite a limited appearance for England at Under-19 level, Lawes has caught the attention of the ECB and is seen as a player with the potential to represent England in the future.
