While there were undoubtedly strong contenders, the final selection prioritized aspects crucial to hosting a world-class tournament.

A World Cup Like No Other: 14 Teams, 3 Hosts

The 2027 Cricket World Cup promises to be a historic event, marking the first time Namibia joins forces with South Africa and Zimbabwe as co-hosts. This edition will also see the return of the 14-team format, last seen in the 2003 World Cup.

Hosts and Qualification Process:

  • South Africa and Zimbabwe gain automatic entry as co-hosts.
  • The top eight teams in the ICC ODI rankings as of March 31, 2027, will secure direct qualification.
  • The remaining four spots will be determined through a qualification process involving various teams.

The qualification pathway will see Namibia, alongside teams like the Netherlands, Scotland, UAE, USA, Nepal, and Oman, battle it out in the World Cup League 2 (CWC L2). This phase will involve 36 ODIs played across nine triangular series, concluding by December 2026. The top four teams from CWC L2 will then progress to the ten-team World Cup Qualifier Playoff. Here, they will face off against other strong contenders to secure their place among the final four World Cup participants.
