Yashasvi Jaiswal’s Turning Point: Sunil Gavaskar’s Hotel Room Reprimand Leads to Record-Breaking Series

In a remarkable turn of events, Yashasvi Jaiswal, India‘s rising cricket star, credited a hotel room reprimand from legendary cricketer Sunil Gavaskar for his phenomenal performance in the recent Test series against England. Jaiswal, who scored over 700 runs in the series, revealed that Gavaskar had pulled him up during India’s tour of South Africa for throwing away his wicket after a good start against West Indies during his debut series last August.

Gavaskar said

“I had mildly reprimanded him in the hotel elevator on Day 1 of the first Test in South Africa for throwing away his wicket in Trinidad (previous Test) after a good 50 plus score and told him never to do the bowlers any favor,” Gavaskar stated.

Gavaskar, known for his meticulous approach to batting, emphasized the importance of converting starts, a lesson he felt Jaiswal needed to learn. “Thankfully, he listened to me and got two big doubles in this series,” Gavaskar added, highlighting Jaiswal’s transformation.

Jaiswal’s performance in the series was exceptional, with 712 runs at an average of 89, including two double centuries. He became the third Indian to score multiple double tons in a single Test series after Vinoo Mankad and Virat Kohli. This remarkable feat earned him the ICC player of the month award.

Reflecting on Jaiswal’s performance, Gavaskar expressed delight in the young player’s success. “It felt very nice to see Yashasvi getting all those runs and the manner in which he dominated the attack,” Gavaskar remarked, acknowledging Jaiswal’s talent and determination.

Despite Jaiswal forgetting Gavaskar’s advice on a few occasions during the series, Gavaskar remained optimistic about the young cricketer’s future. “Hopefully, he will go on to bigger things and never forgets that he is what he is because of Indian cricket,” Gavaskar concluded, highlighting the importance of humility and gratitude in a cricketer’s journey.
