Why didn’t Shreyas Iyer come out to bat today?

Bad news for the Indian fans at the start of the 4th day of the final test as Shreyas Iyer has not come out to bat today. It has been reported that Iyer has complaints of lower back pain, and is currently going through some medical scans which will determine the nature of his ailing.

Yesterday, when Ravindra Jadeja walked-in to bat at 5, which is Shreyas’ usual spot, it was believed that captain Rohit wanted a left-right combination in the middle to unsettle the Aussie bowlers. However, when Jadeja departed today and Srikar Bharat came in to bat, fans suspected something had happened, and it turned out to be true.

In an official statement made by the BCCI, they revealed that the 28-year-old batter had been taken for scans owing to complaints of pain in the lower back. The statement read, “Shreyas Iyer complained of pain in his lower back following the third day’s play. He has gone for scans and the BCCI Medical Team is monitoring him.”

It is yet to be revealed whether Shreyas will come out to bat in this test match or not, and how grave his injury is. This is a must-win game for India and Shryeas’ absence could cost the team their ticket to the World Test Championship final.

It must be noted that this is not the first time Shreyas has made complaints of back pain. The KKR-skipper had missed the first test match in Nagpur because of a similar pain in his lower back.

Earlier today, India resumed from their overnight score of 289 for the loss of 3 wickets. Jadeja was the first to depart, out caught by Usman Khawaja off Todd Murphy. India would be looking to get past Australia’s lead today and make the Aussies bat within the day in order to get a result out of this test match.
