Watch: Jonny Bairstow ran out Ishan Kishan in a unique way

Mumbai Indians took on Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in the 19th match of IPL 2019. That game included a unique dismissal. Jonny Bairstow was the inflicter of that dismissal.

The visitors batted first after losing the toss. They were rocked back early after losing 4 wickets for 63 runs. MI had brought in Ishan Kishan for the first time this season. He wasn’t having the best of times with the bat as SRH bowlers kept him at bay.

In the 13th over, he was facing Rashid Khan. Off the 5th ball of the over, he dabbed it towards the cover and set off for a run immediately. Kieron Pollard, who was at the non-striker’s, refused to run. The left-hander had to turn back quickly to regain his crease.

Vijay Shankar was the fielder who collected the ball and threw it quickly towards the keeper. But Jonny Bairstow, before collecting the ball, had dislodged the bails with his leg. When the keeper gathered the ball, he had another go at the stumps. The on-field umpire referred it to the third umpire.

The SRH fielders weren’t looking too interested as they felt that it would be not out as the stumps were broken early. But when the replays were shown, they presented another picture.

Great presence of mind by Jonny Bairstow

The keeper had realized that he had broken the stumps with his pad and showed great presence of mind immediately. After Bairstow gathered the ball, he uprooted a stump as Ishan Kishan dived to get in. When bails are off, to get the batsman run out, one has to uproot a stump. That’s what Jonny Bairstow did.

While diving in, Kishan’s bat popped up and was in the air when the stump was uprooted. As a result, the third umpire ruled him out. It was quick thinking by the English keeper which made the dismissal possible.
