Sunil Gavaskar Warns of Potential Setback for Rishabh Pant’s IPL Comeback

Former Indian cricket captain Sunil Gavaskar has offered a cautious outlook on Rishabh Pant‘s anticipated return to the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2024. Pant, who suffered multiple injuries in a serious car crash two years ago, is nearing the final stages of his recovery and is expected to make a comeback in the upcoming IPL season.

Gavaskar, known for his astute observations, shared his views on Pant’s comeback, expressing both excitement and caution. He emphasized the importance of Pant being fully healthy before returning to competitive cricket. Gavaskar said, “I’m also a big fan of him. For me the most important thing, is he should be healthy like before, so that he can come and entertain us. It will be very difficult for him and it will take some time for him to get that batting fluency. But good that he has started training,”

Pant, known for his explosive batting style, is expected to play as a batter initially, using the Impact Player rule, to ease back into the game. However, Gavaskar cautioned that Pant might not be the same player initially due to the knee injury’s impact on his batting and keeping abilities. He stated, “Knee plays a pivotal role in batting as well as keeping — which of course he may not do initially. Maybe he won’t be the usual Rishabh Pant that we are used to seeing.”

Despite his injury, Gavaskar remains hopeful for Pant’s return to full fitness. He suggested that if Pant regains full fitness, he should resume captaincy of the Delhi Capitals, a position he had to relinquish due to his injury. Gavaskar believes that Pant has the ability to think on his feet and lead the team effectively.

Pant’s return to competitive cricket will be closely watched by fans and experts alike. His comeback will not only be a testament to his resilience but also a significant moment in his career. As he prepares to rejoin the Delhi Capitals, Pant will be aiming to make a strong impact and showcase his prowess once again in the IPL.
