Sunil Gavaskar Criticizes Rohit Sharma’s Proposal for Best of Three WTC Finals

Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has expressed his disagreement with current captain Rohit Sharma’s suggestion of having a best of three finals for the ICC World Test Championship (WTC). Gavaskar criticized the idea and questioned whether similar demands would be raised in other tournaments such as the Indian Premier League (IPL).

Gavaskar emphasizes on mental preparation

In an interview with India Today, Gavaskar stated, “No. This has been decided for a long time, you know even before you enter that first match of the cycle that the final is going to be just one-off. So, you have to be prepared mentally.”

Drawing a comparison to the IPL, Gavaskar highlighted that teams in the tournament do not ask for a best of three format. He emphasized that players are aware of the structure and should mentally prepare themselves accordingly. He further expressed concerns that if a best of three series was implemented for the WTC final, it could lead to future demands for longer series, possibly even a best of five.

Gavaskar disagrees with Rohit

Rohit Sharma had earlier expressed his desire to play a three-match series for the WTC final, following India’s defeat to Australia. However, Gavaskar disagreed with the proposal, stating that players should be prepared for a one-off final from the beginning of the tournament cycle.

Shifting the focus to the upcoming World Cup, Rohit Sharma spoke about the team’s approach and the pressure to win. He acknowledged the importance of playing differently and with freedom in order to achieve success. Reflecting on past events, Rohit emphasized the need to change the mindset and not be solely focused on winning each match.

“When the World Cup will be held in October, we will try to play in a different way. We will try to give people freedom and not think that we have to win this or that match,” said Rohit.

The pressure to win the World Cup on home soil will be immense, with India’s last World Cup triumph dating back 12 years. Rohit Sharma indicated that the team’s approach would be different this time, focusing on doing things differently and not succumbing to the pressure of specific matches or events
