Sourav Ganguly Backs Rohit Sharma for Long-Term Captaincy, Emphasizes Well-Deserved Break

Former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly has thrown his unequivocal support behind Rohit Sharma, endorsing him for a prolonged stint as the captain of the Indian cricket team. Ganguly, impressed with Rohit’s astute captaincy during the recently concluded ODI World Cup, firmly believes that Rohit should continue to lead India, at least until the T20 World Cup scheduled for June.

Deserved Rest for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli

In a conversation with reporters, Ganguly acknowledged the strategic decision by Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to opt for a break during the white-ball leg of the upcoming South Africa series, commencing on December 10. The former skipper emphasized the importance of this rest, ensuring that the duo returns “fresh” for the challenging and action-packed cricketing calendar that lies ahead.

“Once Rohit is back playing all formats, he should be the captain of India, because he has done so well in the World Cup,” said the former BCCI president.

Rohit’s Leadership Credentials

Praising Rohit Sharma’s stellar performance in the recent ODI World Cup, Ganguly underscored his unwavering belief in Rohit’s captaincy prowess. Drawing attention to Rohit’s pivotal role in leading the team to the ODI World Cup final at home, Ganguly expressed his conviction that once Rohit is back playing all formats, he should resume the captaincy.

“You saw in the World Cup how well they played. They are absolutely integral and an important part of Indian cricket.”, Ganguly emphasized.

Extension of Rahul Dravid’s Contract

Delving into the coaching dynamics, Ganguly expressed his satisfaction with the decision to extend head coach Rahul Dravid‘s contract. Reflecting on his tenure as the president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Ganguly revealed that during that time, they convinced Dravid to take on the coaching role. He conveyed his happiness at seeing Dravid’s tenure extended, emphasizing the coach’s role in shaping the team’s performance.

“I’m not surprised that they have shown faith in Dravid. When I was president of the Board, we convinced him to do this job. And I’m so happy to see yesterday that his tenure has been extended.”, Ganguly further mentioned.
