Sehwag gives KKR special advice to get the best out of Andre Russell

Andre Russell, the explosive West Indies all-rounder, has had a surprisingly quiet start to IPL 2023, with only 39 runs to his name in four matches. This is an uncharacteristic performance from the big-hitting cricketer, who is known for his match-winning abilities with the bat. To make matters worse, he didn’t even get a chance to bowl in the first three matches, but when he finally did against Sunrisers Hyderabad, he showed his bowling prowess by taking three wickets.

However, KKR needed Russell to perform with the bat, particularly after Harry Brook’s unbeaten century (100* off 55) and Aiden Markram’s half-century (50 off 26) powered SRH to a formidable total of 228/4. Despite his team’s desperate need for his big-hitting abilities, Russell fell cheaply to leg-spinner Mayank Markande for just 3 runs off 6 balls. This marks the third consecutive innings where he has been dismissed by a leg-spinner, with opposing captains quickly bringing on their leg-spinners to take advantage of Russell’s struggles.

Sehwag’s advice to Russell

During a discussion on Cricbuzz, former India cricketer Rohan Gavaskar noted Andre Russell’s struggles against leg-spinners and suggested that KKR should consider opening with him to make use of the field restrictions and limit his running due to a leg injury. Virender Sehwag agreed with the suggestion and even advised Russell to try opening during domestic cricket, which the West Indian did and found success, including scoring a century in the CPL.

However, Sehwag expressed uncertainty about whether Russell could do the same for KKR in the IPL. While Russell is a big player for KKR, he may not have the same freedom and control as a captain that he had in the CPL to make such a decision. Nevertheless, Sehwag emphasized that Russell has no problems facing fast bowlers, and opening the batting could give him more balls to face and make him even more dangerous if he gets set.

In light of Russell’s current struggles with leg-spinners, opening the batting could be an option for KKR to explore. However, this decision ultimately lies with the coaching staff and captain, who must consider the team’s overall strategy and balance when making such a move.
