Despite Samson’s impressive unbeaten knock of 68 off 38 deliveries, supported by Riyan Parag‘s blistering 78, the Royals failed to maintain the required over rate standards, leading to the fine.
IPL Statement said
An IPL statement confirmed the fine, stating, “Sanju Samson, the Rajasthan Royals captain, has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Gujarat Titans at the Sawai Man Singh Stadium, Jaipur on April 10.”
“As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Samson was fined Rs 12 lakh,” the statement added.
In the match, Samson’s innings, supported by Parag’s contributions, helped the Royals post a formidable total of 196 for 3. However, the Titans staged a dramatic comeback in the final five overs, chasing down 73 runs off the last 30 balls.
The pressure mounted on Rashid Khan as he thumped the final ball to the boundary, securing victory for the Titans with a total of 199-7.
Despite the defeat, Samson praised the Titans for their exceptional performance in batting, bowling, and fielding. The fine serves as a reminder to teams to maintain the required over rate standards as per the IPL’s regulations, ensuring smooth and timely completion of matches.
