Rohit Sharma’s Dismissal Raises Eyebrows

India’s face off with West Indies in the 34th match of World Cup 2019 saw Rohit Shama walking out of the ground at the initial stage. This didn’t only put India in a deep soup but created a lot of controversy as well as the dismissal wasn’t a legitimate one, arguably.

The Story

Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first. But their innings started off on a drama note with Rohit Sharma getting dismissed after adding just 18 runs off 23 balls. With India’s score on 29/1 in the 6th over, it was a tricky situation for India. The duo was adding five runs per over and on the right track to give India a solid base. But the last ball of 6th oversaw Kemar Roach bowling a good length delivery that went past Rohit Sharma’s bat. There was a noise and West Indies appealed for caught behind. It looked like Rohit got an inside edge initially.

Rohit Sharma’s Dismissal Controversy

The on-field umpire wasn’t convinced and signaled not out. But the Windies captain Jason Holder wanted to review the decision so he went for DRS call. Although the fielding team was confident about the edging, Rohit was not. Even the replays didn’t show anything conclusive. The Snickometer did show some movement but nothing definite. It could have been easily gone for the batsman’s favor. But the third umpire, Michael Gough overturned the decision by on-field umpire and declared Rohit Sharma out.

Rohit Sharma obviously was in disbelieve. Interestingly a lot of fans and experts were also not sure about the dismissal. Generally, the third umpire takes a long time in case of such a close call. But Gough seemed too much sure about the same while giving the final call. This raised too many eyebrows especially because of the way Indian middle order struggled later.
