Rinku Singh and Prasidh Krishna debut in the 1st T20I Against Ireland

In a momentous clash against Ireland, India’s cricket fans had reason to cheer as two debutants, Rinku Singh and Prasidh Krishna, marked their maiden appearances in T20 International cricket. The match, held on Friday, August 18, 2023, showcased the promising talents of these newcomers and provided a glimpse into India’s cricketing future.

Much deserved cap

Rinku Singh, a 25-year-old middle-order batter, made his much-anticipated debut, having gained prominence with his outstanding performance for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) during the IPL 2023 season. Singh’s inclusion had been eagerly awaited after his remarkable run, amassing 474 runs in 14 IPL matches at an impressive average of 59.25 and a strike-rate of 149.52. His memorable feat of smashing five consecutive sixes in the final over of a match resonated with fans and propelled him into the national spotlight.

The debutant’s moment of glory came when he received his T20I cap from captain Jasprit Bumrah before the toss. This recognition symbolized the culmination of his hard work and dedication to the sport. Singh’s journey to the national squad was met with mixed reactions, including criticism directed at the selection panel for not including him in previous white-ball series. However, the selectors stood by their promise to acknowledge Singh’s potential, ultimately naming him in India’s T20I squad for the tour against Ireland.

Joining Singh on the international stage was Prasidh Krishna, a 27-year-old pacer. While Krishna had already participated in 14 ODIs, his T20I debut marked a fresh chapter in his cricketing career. Having last represented India in August 2022, Krishna’s journey to the T20I arena was characterized by rehabilitation and hard work at the National Cricket Academy (NCA). His return showcased his resilience and commitment to representing the national team.

The match itself saw India winning the toss and choosing to bowl first under overcast conditions. The inclusion of Shivam Dube, making his return to the national team after a hiatus since February 2020, further added to the excitement of the encounter. India are in the driver’s seat as they have taken more than half of the wickets in less than 10 overs.
