RCB Misses Out on Tilak Varma: Hesson Reveals Details from Mega Auction Show

Another new edition of IPL is set to commence soon. All the franchises are set to enter into the new season with all their strength. In 2022, all the IPL franchises have gone through major changes. A lot of things changed after the mega auction. Some played was retained and some of them started their new innings with new franchises. Before heading to IPL 2024, RCB’s Mike Hesson revealed their plan to sign Tilak Verma which didn’t happen.

Mike Hesson Revealed the Secret:

Before stepping into the 2022 IPL season, Royal Challengers Bangalore has gone through a lot of changes. Virat Kohli stepped down from the captaincy in 2021 and Faf du Plessis led the team from 2022. They released players like Yuzvendra Chahal, Devdutt Padikkal, and many others. They signed a bunch of new players.

Before starting the IPL 2024, Mike Hesson revealed one of the targets they missed in IPL 2022. In the recent show, Hesson shared that RCB considered Tilak Varma but opted not to sign the young player during the mega auction. He said, “Tilak Varma was one player that slipped away. He was on our scouting list. We went for Rajat Patidar at that time. We needed to make a decision on who we were going for.”

Later he added, “It would have been nice to have another left-hander in the top order. There was a lot of talk that he was susceptible to the short ball domestically. But certainly since he’s come to the IPL, he’s made every post a winner.”

During the 2022 mega auction, Tilak Varma garnered bids from four teams, excluding RCB. Ultimately, the left-hander secured a spot with Mumbai Indians for INR 1.70 crore.

Hesson on Chahal:

Despite his impressive performance in the 2021 season, where he claimed 18 wickets with an economy of 7.05, Chahal was unexpectedly not retained for IPL 2022. They didn’t make any bids for him at the auction. Instead, Chahal joined Rajasthan Royals for INR 6.50 crore.

Speaking on a show, Hesson explained the reasons behind RCB’s inability to reacquire Chahal for Bangalore. He said, “We only retained three players because we wanted to buy back both Harshal Patel and Yuzi at the auction. By only retaining three players, it gave us an extra four crore to do that. Probably the thing that I’m frustrated about even now is the fact that he couldn’t make the top two marquee lists despite being one of the best ever in the IPL. That was ridiculous. And the fact that he came in at No.65 in the auction list (sic) meant that it was really difficult for us to guarantee that we will get him. “

Later he added, “If we saved all our cash and waited for set six, we knew there were five other teams that had more money than us. Suppose we’d let go of all the bowlers before that and still failed to get Yuzi, we would have then been left without a leg-spinner.”
