Ravichandran Ashwin weighs his opinion on BCCI’s decision to appreciate Test Players

Ravichandran Ashwin weighed his opinion on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for its recent stance. BCCI made a recent announcement on prioritizing Test cricket over the Indian Premier League (IPL). Moreover, Ashwin talked about the decision of Jay Shah and BCCI on the recent decision of the board to appreciate the Test players over white ball players.

The BCCI’s secretary, Jay Shah, recently made an announcement. He announced that centrally contracted players must participate in domestic cricket if they are not involved in international matches. Moreover, this move comes after the removal of Shreyas Iyer and Ishan Kishan from their annual contracts. However, as per reports, they refused to play in the Ranji Trophy.

Ishan Kishan missed the entire Ranji season, which led to criticism from chief selector Ajit Agarkar, while Shreyas Iyer opted out of Mumbai’s Ranji quarterfinal match against Baroda, citing back pain. Despite NCA clarifying that Iyer was fit to play, the cricketer decided to skip the match. Consequently, BCCI took disciplinary action against both players.

In contrast, several players skipped the Ranji Trophy this year to focus on the upcoming IPL. Ashwin believes that BCCI’s message is clear – Test cricket is of paramount importance. He also emphasized that while the BCCI is promoting Test cricket, it is ultimately up to the players to decide if they want to play cricket for the entire year or just focus on specific formats.

R Ashwin talked about BCCI’s historic move. He liked the BCC’s move to value test players. Moreover, he said that IPL is not everything. He called the test cricket of “paramount importance”.

“What we must understand here is the message being conveyed by the organisational body here, it said we are prioritising Test cricket. IPL is not everything as far as we are concerned. They are saying Test cricket is of paramount importance. We are going to promote it and we expect people eligible to play this format. In my view, they are making all the right noises,” Ashwin told Indian Express.

“At the same time, whether a cricketer wants to do all the 12 months, or only want to do the two months or whether they want to be relevant playing T20 cricket and one-day cricket and do not want to be playing Test cricket, is their choice,” he added.

“Now things have changed. There is a cricket Twitter war going on, on who should be there in the squad, what are the reasons somebody is selected. At the end of the day, we need to understand that there is a selection committee and things will have to happen according to what the team requires,” the 37-year-old mentioned.
