Following India’s narrow defeat against England in the Hyderabad Test, head coach Rahul Dravid has identified the team’s failure to capitalize on batting opportunities as the pivotal factor behind their loss. Dravid highlighted the significance of converting good starts into substantial scores during the first innings as a missed opportunity that ultimately cost India the game.
“I thought we left probably 70 runs on the board in the first innings… some good starts and we didn’t really capitalize… I just felt we left those 70, 80 runs back in the hut in the first innings,” Dravid lamented, reflecting on India’s batting performance.
Assessment of England’s Unorthodox Batting Strategy
Dravid acknowledged the challenge posed by England’s unorthodox batting approach, characterized by sweeps, reverse sweeps, and reverse scoops executed with precision. He particularly lauded Ollie Pope for his masterful display of reverse sweeps, which unsettled the Indian bowlers and contributed significantly to England’s victory.
“We’ll have to counter that (Bazball). I certainly haven’t seen it being done that (playing sweeps, reverse sweeps) consistently against that quality of bowlers… But to be able to play it that consistently and that successfully without making that many mistakes, and maybe one or two odd mistakes, I probably haven’t seen it,” Dravid acknowledged during the post-match press conference.
Focus on Bowling Execution and Discipline
While acknowledging England’s batting prowess, Dravid emphasized the need for improved bowling execution and discipline to counter their unorthodox strategy effectively. He stressed the importance of pitching the ball in the right areas and maintaining discipline in line and length to challenge the opposition batsmen.
“We have to get more disciplined with where we pitch the ball… It’s not the first time that they’ve been challenged. One of the good things about our spinners is that they’ve always come back,” Dravid commented, highlighting the resilience of India’s bowling unit.

Looking ahead, Dravid outlined plans to disrupt England’s momentum and unsettle their confident batting lineup, particularly Ollie Pope, who played a defining innings in the recent Test match. “India will have to seriously plan how to unsettle this cavalier England group, in particular a high-on-confidence Pope,” Dravid remarked, signalling the team’s readiness to address the challenges posed by the opposition.
