Pravin Amre defends Rishabh Pant’s decision to bowl 2 overs of Lalit in powerplay

Pravin Amre, the assistant coach of Delhi Capitals, has reaffirmed the team’s choice to deploy Lalit Yadav during the powerplay in their recent match against Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2024 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.

In a game where Sunrisers Hyderabad won by a margin of 67 runs, Lalit Yadav’s early bowling came under scrutiny, as he conceded 41 runs in just two overs against the aggressive opening duo of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head.

Explaining the tactical decision, Amre stated, “We took a calculated risk with Lalit Yadav, considering SRH’s strong opening partnership and his local background as a Delhi boy.”

Despite the challenging start, Amre praised Sunrisers Hyderabad for their strong batting performance, particularly highlighting the explosive partnership between Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma, which helped SRH post a record-breaking total of 266/7 in their 20 overs.

Delhi Capitals’ batting response saw promising contributions from Jake Fraser McGurk and Abhishek Porel. However, the team struggled to maintain momentum after their dismissals, eventually falling short and managing only 199 runs in 19.1 overs.

Reflecting on the defeat, Amre emphasized the exceptional power-hitting displayed by SRH’s batsmen during the powerplay.

“Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma batted aggressively in the powerplay, which was commendable,” he remarked.

Despite the loss, Amre expressed confidence in the team’s ability to bounce back, stating, “Abishek Porel is known for his finishing skills, but we wanted to utilize him in the powerplay as well.”
