Auckland Aces are set to celebrate the illustrious cricket career of Martin Guptill on January 4, with a special ‘Thank You, Gup’ day during their men’s Super Smash T20 game against Wellington Firebirds at the Eden Park Outer Oval. The day aims to honor the 37-year-old’s significant contributions to both New Zealand and Auckland cricket.
Renaming The Venue
In a symbolic gesture, the Eden Park Outer Oval will temporarily transform into ‘The Martin Guptill Oval’ for the testimonial game, creating a fitting backdrop for acknowledging Guptill’s impact on the sport.
Beyond the professional arena, Martin Guptill’s influence will extend to grassroots cricket. Starting from the 2024-25 season, Auckland’s Men’s Premier Club T20 competition will be named the Martin Guptill Cup, a testament to his enduring legacy in shaping the cricketing landscape.
Guptill’s Clarification on Retirement
Despite the celebratory nature of the event, Martin Guptill has clarified that the ‘Thank You, Gup’ day is not a retirement party for him. The seasoned cricketer remains committed to playing in franchise T20 and T10 leagues worldwide, showcasing his passion for the game beyond the domestic and international arenas.
Auckland Cricket CEO Iain Laxon expressed admiration for Guptill, stating, “Martin is without doubt one of our country’s finest ever white-ball cricketers, and we wanted to take the opportunity to celebrate and recognize what he has done for cricket.”
Having made his T20 debut for Auckland in January 2006, Guptill stands as their highest run-getter in the format, accumulating 2313 runs at an average of 37.91 and a strike rate of 133.23. His influence extends to the international stage, where he holds the record for being New Zealand’s leading run-scorer in T20Is, amassing 3531 runs at an average of 31.81 and a strike rate of 135.70.
Continued T20 Presence
While Guptill hasn’t featured for New Zealand since October 2022 and is currently a free agent, he remains active in T20 leagues. His recent stint with Trinbago Knight Riders in CPL 2023 saw him finish as the highest run-scorer, providing a glimpse of his continued form and impact in the shortest format of the game.
