Najmul Hossain to Lead Bangladesh in White-Ball Series Against New Zealand

In a strategic move, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed Najmul Hossain as the captain for both the one-day and T20 international series during their upcoming tour of New Zealand. The decision reflects a commitment to fostering a new cross-format leadership approach.

Despite the return of Litton Das to both series, BCB has expressed confidence in Najmul’s captaincy skills. All-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been named deputy captain in both formats, emphasizing the team’s depth in leadership roles.

BCB Chief Selector Minhajul Abedin shared insights into the decision, stating, “We are trying to have a new cross-format captain, and that is the reason we have appointed Najmul to lead in both ODIs and T20s against New Zealand.” He also highlighted Najmul’s current leadership in the ongoing Test match against New Zealand.

The ODI squad features 11 members from the recently-concluded World Cup, with the return of Afif Hossain and Soumya Sarkar. Leg spinners Rishad Hossain and Rakibul Hasan have received their maiden call-ups in the 50-over format.

Regular skipper Shakib Al Hasan will miss the tour due to national election engagement, while Mahmudullah and Taskin Ahmed are sidelined due to injuries. Minhajul clarified that the exclusion of Mahedi Hasan and Nasum Ahmed from the squad is based on their performance in the recent ODI World Cup.

The T20I squad sees the return of Soumya Sarkar after last year’s T20 World Cup in Australia. Tanvir Islam and Tanzim Hasan Sakib have been included for the shortest format. Surprisingly, Nasum Ahmed, who played both T20Is against Afghanistan in July, has been left out.

The ODIs are scheduled for December 17, 20, and 23, while the T20Is will take place on December 27, 29, and 31. Bangladesh will aim to make a mark under the leadership of Najmul Hossain in this crucial white-ball series against New Zealand.
