Mumbai Indians Out of IPL 2024 Playoffs After Sunrisers Hyderabad Defeat Lucknow Super Giants

The wait is over for the first team to be eliminated from the IPL 2024 playoff race. The five-time champions, Mumbai Indians (MI), have officially been knocked out of contention after Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) secured a convincing win against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) on Wednesday.

MI’s Struggles Seal Their Fate

MI’s struggles throughout the season culminated in this early exit. Under the leadership of new captain Hardik Pandya, the team managed only four wins in their first eleven matches. Their recent loss against Kolkata Knight Riders on May 3rd further dampened their playoff hopes. Even a win against SRH wouldn’t have been enough, as they required favorable results from other matches as well.

SRH’s dominant win over LSG on Wednesday effectively sealed MI’s fate. Hyderabad’s victory propelled them to 14 points in the standings. With Delhi Capitals and Lucknow Super Giants scheduled to play on May 14th, at least one of those teams will also reach 14 points, mathematically eliminating MI from contention regardless of their remaining results.

MI’s Remaining Matches and Internal Scrutiny

Despite facing elimination, MI still have two matches remaining in the season – one against KKR at Eden Gardens in Kolkata and a final clash against LSG on May 17th. Even if they win both remaining matches, they can only manage a maximum of 12 points, far from enough to secure a top 4 spot.

MI’s disappointing performance has sparked internal scrutiny. While Jasprit Bumrah has shone with the ball, the team’s batting lineup has lacked consistency. Hardik Pandya’s captaincy has also come under criticism.

Sunrisers Hyderabad Bounce Back in Style

While MI face an early exit, SRH’s win against LSG was a much-needed boost for their campaign. After their recent loss to MI, Hyderabad stormed back into the top three of the IPL standings with a dominant performance. LSG’s batting faltered, managing only 165 runs in their 20 overs.

In contrast, SRH openers Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma put on a masterclass, reaching their fifties in just 16 and 19 balls respectively. SRH secured a comfortable victory with 10 wickets and 9.4 overs to spare, solidifying their position in the top tier of the competition.
