Here’s why MS Dhoni has been brought back for New Zealand T20Is

Just when we thought MS Dhoni’s career in T20 Internationals was over, he makes a comeback to the national side. He was dropped for the T20I series at home against Windies and for the Australian tour. But now when the Indian team travels to New Zealand after the Australian tour, the 37-year-old will accompany the team in the shortest format as well.

The chairman of selectors MSK Prasad had mentioned that Dhoni’s T20I career wasn’t over when he was dropped earlier. The former Indian wicketkeeper Prasad has revealed that MS Dhoni was rested for the 6 T20Is against Windies and Australia. The motive to rest Dhoni was to give more game time to Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh pant.

“We categorically told that he (MS Dhoni) is going to be rested for those six matches so that we can give more game time to Dinesh Karthik and Rishabh Pant. So that is the very reason. And now they have played quite a few matches so we thought now we have to bring MS into the squad,” said Prasad while talking to the media in Melbourne.

Pant rested so that he returns fresh

Recently, when India’s squad was announced for the New Zealand tour, Rishabh Pant’s name was missing in the ODI side. As per Prasad, after the Australia Tests, Pant will be rested so that he comes back fresh for the all-important ODI World Cup in 2019.

Additionally, he mentioned that India now has a core squad of 20 members for the World Cup next year and the squad will revolve around these set of players. The Men in Blue now have only 13 ODIs left before the mega event to be hosted by England and Wales.
