In a heartwarming revelation, Sri Lankan pacer Matheesha Pathirana has likened former Chennai Super Kings (CSK) captain MS Dhoni to a father figure, crediting him for his mentorship and support during the ongoing IPL 2024 season. Pathirana, who has showcased stellar performances for CSK, shared his sentiments during a recent episode of ‘Lions Upclose’, shedding light on Dhoni’s pivotal role in nurturing young talent within the team.
Pathirana’s journey in the IPL has been nothing short of remarkable, with his unique slingy action reminiscent of Sri Lankan bowling legend Lasith Malinga. Currently ranked fifth in the list of top wicket-takers in IPL 2024, Pathirana attributes his success to the unwavering confidence and guidance provided by Dhoni.
“After my father, in my cricket life, mostly he (Dhoni) is playing my father’s role because he is always taking care of me, giving me advice, what I have to do, similar to my father when I am at home,” expressed Pathirana, highlighting Dhoni’s paternalistic approach towards mentoring him.
Pathirana elaborated on Dhoni’s understated yet impactful mentorship style, emphasizing the significance of Dhoni’s advice both on and off the field. Despite Dhoni’s reserved demeanor, Pathirana stressed the profound impact of Dhoni’s guidance, citing it as a source of immense confidence for him.

“He’s not telling a lot of things when I am on the field and off the field. He tells just small things, but it makes a lot of difference. So those little things, I take a lot of confidence (from),” shared the 21-year-old Sri Lankan sensation.
Off the field, Pathirana revealed a deeper connection with Dhoni, characterized by mutual respect and camaraderie. While acknowledging their limited interactions, Pathirana expressed his admiration for Dhoni’s wisdom and highlighted the veteran’s emphasis on enjoying the game and maintaining physical fitness.
“Off the field, we don’t talk that much; but if I have to ask something from him, definitely I would go to him and ask. Every time he is telling me ‘enjoy your game and take care of your body’,” disclosed Pathirana, reflecting on Dhoni’s invaluable counsel.
