Lance Klusener Disappointed At Bowling This IPL Season; Criticises Impact Player Rule

As the IPL 2024 season is approaching it’s conclusion, one of the hottest topics has definitely been the impact substitute rule. With almost every match having a team score 200+ runs, the rule has no doubt, been a nightmare for the bowlers.

Several cricketers like Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill, have criticised the new rule more or less implying that the rule has affected the quality of gameplay. The Impact Player Rule has proved to be more in favour of the entertainment aspect, rather than supporting the gameplay.

Another thing to note, is that T20 format games are already mostly favoured for batting. Introduction of this rule has now given more support to the batter, while almost putting the bowlers in a handicapped position.

Lance Klusener has this to say about IPL 2024

Former South African cricketer and Lucknow Super Giants coach Lance Klusener has opened up about IPL 2024 favouring the batsmen.

When LSG fell four runs short of 200, they ended a season-long streak of 12 consecutive 200-plus scores – an extraordinary event that summed up bowlers’ plight. Klusener, like many other coaches and players in the league, expressed his displeasure with the regulation and preferred 11-v-11 duels, but he also questioned the quality of bowling this season.

“I think just looking at bowling performances throughout the competition, for me it has been quite disappointing,” Klusener said. “There hasn’t been a lot of good bowling. It’s been a lot of ordinary bowling and batters are just so good these days that they’re taking advantage.” said Klusener

KKR’s Assistant coach Doeschate about Impact player rule

Ryan ten Doeschate, Kolkata Knight Riders’ assistant coach had earlier sympathised with the bowlers as they are the ones who have to face all of the hits this season. Doeschate further encouraged the bowlers to find a way to overcome the situation while facing the challenges, even though the bat vs ball contest seems one sided.

“Everything was already in the batter’s favour, I feel sorry for the bowlers as it’s gone more towards batters’ side now,” ten Doeschate said.

However, he asked the bowlers to keep an open mind. “There are two ways you can look at it. You can step back and say, ‘oh it’s unfair, we are bowling machines’ or you can say ‘we are going to find a way, we are gonna try new things, we are gonna embrace the challenge'”, he added.
