IPL 2024 Points Table: Updated After KKR vs SRH Match 3

The second day of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season proved to be just as thrilling as the first, with both matches going down to the wire and requiring last-over heroics. This exciting start to the tournament has also led to a shakeup in the early points table.

Punjab Kings Sneak Past Delhi Capitals in a Tight Chase

In the first match of the day, played at the Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali, the Punjab Kings (PBKS) edged past the Delhi Capitals (DC) by a narrow margin. Chasing a target of 175 on a good batting pitch, PBKS rode on a brilliant knock from Sam Curran (63 off 47 balls) to secure a dramatic victory.

Despite a valiant fightback from DC bowlers in the death overs, their sloppy fielding earlier in the innings proved costly.  Crucially, they dropped Sam Curran twice – once on 33 and again in the penultimate over – allowing him to anchor the chase and guide his team home.

Speaking at the post-match presentation, Delhi Capitals skipper Rishabh Pant, making his comeback to competitive cricket after a long injury layoff, acknowledged his team’s shortcomings. “The boys did well to bring us back into the match at various stages,” he said, “but dropped catches proved to be the turning point.”

Pant further elaborated on the impact of a key bowling absence. Ishant Sharma’s early exit due to an ankle injury forced DC to reshuffle their bowling attack, leaving them a bowler short throughout the second innings.

Earlier, batting first, DC posted a total of 174 runs, with contributions from various batsmen.  Shai Hope top-scored with a decent 33, but it was the late heroics of impact substitute Abhishek Porel that added valuable runs to their total. Porel smashed Harshal Patel for a crucial 25 runs in the final over, showcasing his power-hitting abilities.

The Punjab Kings bowlers displayed commendable discipline throughout their innings, with Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel picking up two wickets apiece.

KKR Survive Klaasen Scare to Edge Past SRH

The second match of the day, played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, witnessed another last-over finish. The Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) managed to hold their nerve against a late onslaught from Heinrich Klaasen of the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) to secure a thrilling victory.

Chasing a target of 209 set by KKR, SRH got off to a decent start. However, a tight spell from Sunil Narine, who conceded only 19 runs in his four overs without giving away a single boundary, put the brakes on their scoring rate.  This spell proved to be a crucial turning point in the match.

Earlier, KKR posted a formidable total of 208 runs on the board, thanks to a powerful knock from Andre Russell (64* off 25 balls) and a well-paced fifty from Phil Salt (54 off 40 balls).  Ramandeep Singh also chipped in with a valuable cameo of 35 runs off just 17 deliveries.

Despite a strong showing from their bowlers, KKR almost let the victory slip away in the final over. Heinrich Klaasen’s aggressive knock of 63 runs off just 29 balls, laced with eight sixes, brought SRH back into the contest. However, young bowler Harshit Rana held his nerve in the final over, conceding only 12 runs and securing a dramatic win for KKR.

Points Table Shakeup

These two victories have led to a shakeup in the early points table.  The Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have both secured wins, propelling them to the second and third spots respectively.  Meanwhile, the Delhi Capitals (DC) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) find themselves at the 5th and 4th spot respectively.
