IPL 2024 Points Table: Updated After Delhi Capitals vs Gujarat Titans Match No. 40

Another thrilling clash has ended with intense excitement. On the 40th match of the tournament, Delhi Capitals faced Gujarat Titans at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. The match witnessed some incredible batting performances, outstanding bowling brilliance and some incredible bowling records. But Delhi Capitals defeated Gujarat Titans by a narrow margin of 4 runs and that brought some notable changes in the points table.

Delhi Capitals’ Amazing Batting and Titans’ Struggle:

In their second encounter with Gujarat Titans, Delhi Capitals opted to bat first, with Jake Fraser-McGurk and Prithvi Shaw providing an initial boost with 23 and 11 runs, respectively. Axar Patel’s impressive 66 off 43 balls, including a half-century, set a strong foundation. However, it was captain Rishabh Pant who stole the show with an unbeaten 88 off just 43 deliveries, featuring 5 boundaries and 8 sixes, propelling the Capitals to a formidable 224/4.

Meanwhile, in a strategic move, Gujarat Titans chose to bowl first, initially finding success with Sandeep Warrier’s quick dismissals of Fraser-McGurk and Shaw. Despite early breakthroughs, Titans’ bowlers, led by Rashid Khan and Mohit Sharma, struggled to contain the Capitals’ onslaught, conceding crucial runs. The Titans’ defensive efforts faltered, with Sharma leaking 73 runs in just four overs, resulting in a challenging chase.

Gujarat’s Excellent Effort But Delhi Capitals’ Bowling Magic:

Facing a challenging target of 122 runs, the Gujarat Titans showed resilience despite early setbacks, with Sai Sudharsan emerging as a standout performer, scoring an impressive 65 runs. Wriddhiman Saha’s aggressive innings of 39 runs and David Miller’s electrifying half-century injected momentum into their chase. However, despite Rashid Khan’s late contribution, the Titans fell short by four runs, their inability to seize crucial moments proving costly.

In response, the Delhi Capitals’ bowlers asserted dominance early on, led by Anrich Nortje’s pivotal dismissal of Titans’ skipper Shubman Gill. Despite a promising partnership between Saha and Sudharsan, Kuldeep Yadav’s breakthroughs halted the Titans’ momentum. Rasikh Salam’s three crucial wickets and Yadav’s contributions restricted the Titans, while Nortje, Mukesh Kumar, and Axar Patel complemented the bowling attack, securing victory for the Capitals.

Changes in the Points Table:

The win played a pivotal role for Delhi Capitals to improve their situation on the points table. After defeating Gujarat Titans by 4 runs, they climbed up to the sixth position. On the other hand, with that defeat, the Gujarat Titans slipped to the seventh position.
