IPL 2023 Final: Rain plays spoilsport as the match is postponed to the ‘reserve’ day

The much anticipated Indian Premier League (IPL) final game between the Gujarat Titans and the Chennai Super Kings was canceled on Sunday due to intense downpours. Just 30 minutes before the scheduled toss, the weather took a turn for the worse, surprising everyone. The ground crew moved quickly to cover the center with two layers of protective sheets, ensuring that the surface and the sections where fast bowlers warm up remained shielded.

With rains pouring down heavily and scattered thunderstorms, the match was finally canceled. The rain gave some hope in the meantime as it slowed down a tad, but it again poured heavily damaging the outfield.

After a brief respite, the rain gradually subsided, although it continued to fall steadily. The sight of large puddles forming on the covers was far from ideal. The outfield suffered greatly from the relentless downpour, bearing the brunt of the heavy rains. The ground’s condition was visibly compromised, causing concern for any cricket for today.

Will the final take place tomorrow?

However, there is still hope for the match to take place tomorrow. According to the rules, if the rain does not allow the match to take place, it will happen on the ‘reserve’ day which is the day after the original final date.

The IPL final may be played on the day that has been designated as the reserve day if rain or other bad weather prevents it from taking place on the scheduled day.

Who will be crowned as the champions if the rain continues tomorrow?

The team that finished first in the league round would be crowned the victor if bad weather also impacted or completely wiped out the reserve day. The Gujarat Titans, who are the defending league winners, took the lead after winning 10 of their first 14 games to earn a commendable 20 points. With 17 points, the Chennai Super Kings secured the second spot, paving the way for a fierce duel between the two teams.
