ICC World Cup 2019: Afghanistan Team Preview, Strengths and Weaknesses

Afghanistan cricket team will be a surprise element in the upcoming World Cup 2019. Since their introduction to world cricket, they have only grown for the betterment. Let’s take a look at the Strengths and Weaknesses of Team Afghanistan for the ICC World Cup 2019.

The Squad

Gulbadin Naib (c), Mohammad Shahzad (wk), Hazratullah Zazai, Rahmat Shah, Hashmatullah Shahidi, Asghar Afghan, Mohammad Nabi, Najibullah Zadran, Rashid Khan, Dawlat Zadran, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Noor Ali Zadran, Samiullah Shinwari, Aftab Alam, Hamid Hassan

Strengths of Afghanistan Team

One thing that is commendable about the Afghanistan team is that this newbie never surrender. This attitude has helped them to progress so fast in the world of cricket. The spin trio of Afghanistan is their biggest strength. Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb Ur Rahman will be the key players undoubtedly. Especially for Nabi, there will be a lot in the England pitches under the sun. His off spins can produce magic on the turning tracks. These three have all the exposure and experience, thanks to some of the big leagues they played in. Their performances in those leagues have proved their worth and no wonder these three will be the biggest talking point for the team.

Weaknesses of Afghanistan Team

Afghanistan lack of good pace attacks. Despite having around five pacers in the team they cannot produce the results. The sole dependence on the spin attack can go wrong anytime. Mujeeb Ur Rahman was a bit expensive in the warm-up match against Pakistan which is a warning. The problem with the pacers is that they have been like this forever. They always concede a lot of runs and hardly create any wicket-taking opportunities. Omitting Shapoor Zardan is probably one of those mistakes Afghanistan will forever remember. The batting side is another weak point for the team. They haven’t decided on the top order yet. The dependency will be on Rashid Khan as an all-rounder. But then, too much dependency on his can affect his performance as well.
