“I think it’s just purely down” Hazlewood Questions Impact Player Rule as High Scores Reign in IPL Season

The IPL 2024 is going with all the thrills and adventure. Along with some exciting matches, another thing is catching attention. The ‘Impact Player’ rule is creating buzz. A lot of cricket greats are revealing their views on this matter. Australian bowler Josh Hazlewood is the newest addition to the list. He shared his view on this matter.

The Impact Player Rule:

T20 cricket is always exciting. The Indian Premier League is a celebration of the shortest format of cricket. The Indian fans enjoy two months of exciting T20 cricket every year. To make the tournament even more interesting, the authority introduced the ‘Impact Player’ rule in 2022. After that, the rule played a huge role in the tournament.

Teams can utilize the Impact Player rule by selecting a 12th player from a list of five names announced during the toss. This player has the flexibility to substitute any player in the playing XI as required by the team’s strategy or needs during the match. This flexibility has bolstered teams’ batting depth, contributing to increased run-scoring in matches throughout the season. The rule has added strategic options for teams, allowing them to adapt their line-ups according to match situations.

Josh Hazelwood’s Comment:

In this season, the matches witnessed some giant totals. No target is safe here. In this ongoing season, a lot of players like Rohit Sharma, Mohammed Siraj, and Many others opened up about that. Recently, Australian bowler Josh Hazelwood talked about that. He said, “I think it’s just purely down to that impact. Batting lineups just seem to be never-ending now. I’m not sure it’s a great rule. The conditions have come into play a little bit lately with bowlers having a bit of impact, but I mean, you’ve got like Tim David at number eight, sometimes number nine.”

Later he added, “You don’t really feel like you attack and try and get wickets in the Powerplay because what’s the point when you’ve got those guys coming in at those eight, nine spots? Obviously, the crowd loves it – there are 200-plus scores nearly every night – and it’s good for batters, but it might need a bit of tinkering. I’m certainly not.”

After missing the IPL2024, the Aussie bowler is coming back to the T20 World Cup stage. He has been named on the squad ahead of the tournament. The West Indies and the USA are organizing the tournament jointly. They are anticipating for a successful campaign.
