IPL 2024 is all set to raise its curtain on March 22. It is less than 24 hours left to kick off the latest season. But before stepping into the first game, CSK management shared shocking news. MS Dhoni has stepped down from the captaincy and passed the baton to Ruturaj Gaikwad. Fans are emotional after this announcement. On the eve of the IPL 2024 opener, Chennai Super Kings head coach Stephen Fleming expressed confidence in MS Dhoni playing the full season, noting his improved fitness compared to last year.
CSK’s Captaincy Baton Passed on:
Ruturaj Gaikwad has been named as the new captain of the Chennai Super Kings just ahead of the opening game of IPL 2024 against the Royal Challengers Bangalore at Chepauk. This marks the end of MS Dhoni’s lengthy tenure as captain of CSK, which began with the tournament’s inaugural season in 2008. Despite relinquishing the role in 2022 when Ravindra Jadeja took over, Dhoni reclaimed the captaincy after eight matches, continuing through 2023 when CSK clinched their fifth IPL trophy, tying with the Mumbai Indians at the top of the title leaderboard.
The victory in 2023 was anticipated to be Dhoni’s IPL farewell, following his retirement from international cricket after the 2019 World Cup. However, he committed to returning for another season if his health allowed. Hindered by a knee problem throughout 2023, Dhoni underwent surgery post-season and subsequently joined CSK’s pre-season camp in Chennai earlier this month. Under Dhoni’s leadership, CSK displayed remarkable consistency, featuring in ten finals and securing five IPL titles.
Ruturaj Gaikwad, with 1797 runs from 52 matches at an average of 39.06 and a strike rate of 135.52, assumes leadership amidst the responsibility of determining CSK’s opening pair. Gaikwad’s appointment signifies a new chapter for the team as they strive to maintain their legacy of success under fresh leadership.
Stephen Flemming’s Words:
In Chennai, Stephen Fleming expressed confidence in Dhoni’s batting contribution for the entire IPL season during a press conference. He said, “Expecting MS(Dhoni) to play the whole season. His body is much better from last season.”
Later he added, “I am expecting MS to play and play well. The indications from his pre-season are that he is doing really well. The body is a lot better and stronger than last year with his knee and from what I can see, his desire to contribute and do well is as high as ever. It’s great for us.”
CSK’s Ruturaj Gaikwad will make his captaincy debut against RCB in the IPL’s opening match. Chennai Super Kings kick off their title defense at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, March 22.
